Sarinbuana Eco lodge is located at 700m on the extinct volcano of Batukaru in central Bali, We are 15 minutes away from the Batukaru rainforest and 50 minutes from the nearest provincial town of Tabanan.

• Describe WHY you made the decision to develop an eco resort (100 word max)

20 years ago Norm built a simple house in remote Bali, there was no electricity and you could only get here with 4WD, He married Linda 18 years ago, over the years people wanted to come and share our lives with the Balinese people, so we built a few bungalows and people started to come. The “ eco” part of the journey was a reflection on our beliefs.
Introduction to the Butterfly Club’s Eco Rating
The Butterfly Club Eco Rating has five equally-weighted categories:

• Energy;
• Water;
• Recycling and waste;
• Land and nature conservation; and
• Community.

Each category has five levels, designated by one to five butterflies.  Through self assessment, resort operators completing this rating will determine their own levels within each category based on their responses to items listed below.
Two categories – energy and water – have similar rating systems with Levels 1 and 2 addressing conservation of existing resources, and Levels 3, 4 and 5 addressing creation of renewable energy or capturing water.

Environmental Impacts
We’ve had major impacts, although much remains to be done. In our immediate environment, there is a far greater diversity of plants, resulting in a far greater diversity of animals and birds. Our long-term prohibition on hunting or capturing wild birds or animals has had an impact, but by far the greatest impact has been through the adding financial value to the rainforest and it’s inhabitants. As more local people, by acting responsibly, start making money from an intact rainforest, the greater its chances of effective protection.
Environmental Projects and Programs:

• We’ve sponsored, or facilitated, the planting of thousands of native trees. We continue to plant, and maintain, native trees as an ongoing part of our routine operations (recently our plantings have focused on bird & animal food trees only ie; not timber trees).
• We proposed, and then facilitated, a Nature for Projects swap between our local community, and the Seacology foundation, resulting in an agreement to protect the rainforest in return for funds which we have used to build: a 15 x 10m community hall, a temple for the school, 3 computers for the school, rainforest pathways and Balinese orchestra instruments for the village children.
• Currently, with the ‘Friends of Bali’s National Parks Foundation’, we’ve applied for permission to start breeding rare hornbills, which have disappeared from our local forest.
• With a donation from a guest, we recently installed a large and detailed, environmental information sign near the entrance to the rainforest.
• We provided environmental books, and other materials, to the local school, and we brought an expert to the village to teach farmers about organic rice production.
• We have a Breeding program for the Bali Starling at the lodge (the only endemic bird of Bali now considered extinct in the wild)

Our staff learns about non-toxic pest control, organic farming, healthy cooking, responsible waste management, energy conservation, non-toxic cleaning products, responsible land management and the issues of social sustainability. Over time, this information disseminates slowly, by osmosis, into the wider community.

Socially, we’re really proud of the children’s: Silat group, the football team, English class and the gamelan group. Our village is quite remote with few facilities, and very little Government support. The community was perceived as strong, but rather ‘primitive’. Few opportunities, of any kind, were available to children in the village.

• Silat is the Indonesian martial art. We have around 25 children in the group, mainly girls, training twice a week. Our village hasn’t had a Silat teacher for 20 years, but when our kids compete in the provincial center, they win most of their matches. The Eco Lodge is the sole sponsor.
• The football team has brought together the young boys of the village, and taught them about teamwork, physical fitness, fair play and joy in competition. When we take our boys to compete against wealthy, city-based teams, they win most of their games. The Eco Lodge is the sole sponsor.
• Gamelan instruments are very expensive, a complete set costs around $5,000. So they were unable to learn before our funding from Seacology. The kid’s gamelan group practices regularly, and now performs in public.  The Eco Lodge is currently providing traditional costumes for the group.  

Village kids, like farmers, have low status in the wider community. In our village, we’ve seen the ability of Silat, Football, English classes and the Gamelan orchestra, to develop their skills, and raise their self-esteem.
When they leave the village to compete in the wider world for them, it’s a big deal. We do not put too much emphasis on winning however, the kids themselves are competitive. Losing for them reinforces their low social status.
Winning, proves they can compete, and possibly win/ succeed in what ever they choose to do.

Please describe
Sarinbuana Eco Lodge has become the major local employer in our rural area, and it is the main force behind nature conservation in our area. Consolidating the Eco Lodge business, for our employees, our local suppliers, and the local community, is our major, overarching achievement of the last couple of years. 
The key to the effective protection of natural areas is… The co-operation of the people living around the protected area. We now have a significant new sector in the local economy, based on *ecotourism, and there is an increasing desire to preserve nature for economic reasons, working more powerfully for conservation, as economic impacts increase.
We have shown that being truly green can also be profitable. Our productivity, on .75hectare, with only 4 bungalows, is, by any measure, very high. Simplifying a bit, we can say that the Eco Lodge generates 20-25% of the total, local economy**, in a remote, rural population of around 1,000 people, living alongside a protected forest.
*We use ‘Ecotourism’ here in the real sense, where the principles of social, economic, and environmental sustainability, are all satisfied. There is a broad and discerning market for genuine ecotourism, we don’t have to cheat to win. It’s noteworthy that our guest feedback makes it very clear that they do not want ‘green-washing’.
