Lodges that are actually what they say they are
Plenty of hotels call themselves eco-friendly. A good number of them
aren’t. Every lodge and tour in this directory is
checked by hand before it goes on the list, and left
off when the answers don’t hold up.
Search above, or start with a part of the world and see what’s there.
- Since 2003
- Reading through lodges one at a time, for over twenty years.
- About 100 lodges
- A short list on purpose. Everything here has been looked at properly.
- 40 countries
- Across eight regions, from the Gambia to Papua New Guinea.
Greenwashing is easy. Getting listed here isn’t.
No fee buys a place on this list, and no badge is handed out for
saying the right words on a website.
“I’ve turned away lodges I liked, because the answers didn’t
add up. That’s the whole point of the list.”– [Your name], who reads every listing
Every listing is read by a person
Not a form, not an algorithm. Each lodge is looked at individually
before it appears, and the ones that don’t stand up don’t go on.
We ask about the actual practices
Water, energy, waste, what the local community gets out of it, and
what happens to the wildlife and plants around the property.
Some go further and take the Eco Score
Lodges can sit the Butterfly Eco Rating exam and publish the result
out of 5. Where a lodge has one, you’ll see it on their listing.

A strong result
Sustainability is built into how the place is run day to day, and the
