Puerto Rico Eco Resorts-Tours

Caribbean – Eco-tourism in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is one of the most populated of the Caribbean islands but there is still undeveloped land to visit. El Yunque National Forest is probably one of the most popular ones because of its proximity to the capital, San Juan. It has one of the few truly tropical forests in the US, getting around 16 inches of rainfall a year. In contrast, another park in Puerto Rico called Guanica State Forest, gets only around 2 1/2 inches of rain. There are many indigenous species of birds, including the endangered Puerto Rican parrot and the Puerto Rican lizard-eating cuckoo. The coquí frog is an indigenous amphibian that measures between 1/4-1 inch and has a distinctive chirp.

Puerto Rico is host to one of the largest cave systems in the world, called the Río Camuy Cave Park in Camuy. There are private tour companies that can take you to less populated caves if you don’t like the standard tourist fare.

There are several phosphorescent bays or bioluminescent bays. At night you can see the water light up thanks to dinoflagellates. Well worth seeing.

Culebra Island, off the coast and owned by Puerto Rico, is home to nesting sea turtles. This includes the leatherback turtles. Here The Department of Natural and Environmental Resources of Puerto Rico is in charge of a turtle conservation program.
