The Second Prize Winner, 3 Rivers, proposed the Installation of
a hydraulic ram pump system in the nearby village health centre,
which will then provide a regular water supply for the medical
facilities in the village. A workshop on hydraulic ram pumping
at the health centre would also be held during installation, thus
training other locals in the use of hydraulic ram pumping and its
environmental benefits. The graduates of the workshop will then
be encouraged to hold similar workshops in their own villages.

RIVERS ECO LODGE is proud to announce that it is the first hotel
in Dominica to achieve, for the second year running, the prestigious
GREEN GLOBE 21 Benchmarked Certificate under the GREEN GLOBE 21
Certification program.
3 Rivers Eco Lodge has spent considerable time benchmarking its

well as implementing an integrated environmental and social policy.
3 Rivers is extremely proud to have achieved at or above world
best practices in all 6 Earthcheck categories: Energy consumption,

Where possible 3 Rivers has also made improvements in all categories

ongoing reduction of non-renewable resources, extensive cost savings
and secure a sustainable commercial and ecological future for the
business.
Ashley Scott, director of Earthcheck, says that due to the positive
commitment made by 3 Rivers, he is confident that 3 Rivers will
remain a leader in exceptional environmental performance.
About GREEN GLOBE 21
GREEN GLOBE 21 is the global Benchmarking, Certification and improvement
system assisting the international travel and tourism industry
to attain sustainability. GREEN GLOBE 21 provides a certification
system that responds directly to the major environmental problems
facing the planet, including the greenhouse effect, over-use of
freshwater resources, destruction of biodiversity, production of
solid and biological waste and social issues.
Cathy Parsons, Global Manager of GREEN GLOBE 21, says “I
am delighted that 3 Rivers Eco Lodge has achieved Benchmarked status.
3 Rivers is an inspiration to all those people committed to environmentally
sustainable tourism. They have demonstrated through a variety of
initiatives, that the business and its employees can make a difference
to reducing their environmental impact. The commitment they have
shown in signing up to participate in the GREEN GLOBE 21 program
and their achievements set an example for other businesses to follow.”
I am proud to announce that today (November 22, 2004) at their
conference in Istanbul, Turkey, The International Hotel & Restaurant
Association announced that 3 Rivers Eco Lodge, In Dominica, has
come 3rd
in their environmental Best Practices award, 2004 for independent
hotels.
There was a winner and a runner up, and 3 Rivers received the
first honourable mention, making us 3rd in the world for the
independant hotel with the best environmental practices.
We invite you all to share in our celebrations of this achievement
by helping us inform the public, and in so doing we will help
in promoting a better understanding of Dominica’s Green
Globe membership amongst the people of Dominica.
