GENERAL ECO INFO
- Do you have an environmental and/or social sustainability policy YES
/
If yes, please attach.
- Do you have an environmental Management System YES
If yes, please attach.
- Brief Description of property – aim, size, facilities
(150 words max)
We are a small remotely located Lodge off the beaten path, off
the electric grid with access by water only. We are very eco,
and offer all inclusive weekly holidays for fishing, snorkelling,
kayaking, hiking or just plain relaxing. With twenty two acres
plus of grounds and the cabanas situated out over the water it
is truly a paradise. Beautiful hand carved, legally obtained,
Honduras Mahogany doors and hardwood floors in native rosewood we
are a tribute to local craftsmanship and it was all built on
site. The restaurant features an over the water venue and serves
local and American cuisine with an emphasis on sea food.
- Brief description of location (100 words max)
Port Royal, home of Henry Morgan and many other famous pirates
is on the south side of Roatan’s East end.
ENERGY CONSUMPTION / CONSERVATION
ENERGY
- Do you use any renewable energy? YES
If yes, what approximate percentage
and please describe
Depending on weather conditions we average about 80% renewable
energy. We have two 1000 watt wind generators and 54 solar panels
generating almost 5000 watts
- Please describe any energy saving devices in use, and energy
saving programmes you have, and how can guests/visitors participate
At Mango Creek, our guest get to visit our solar and wind generating
area. They get to help in limiting water use by reusing towels
and bedding. They use the composting toilets and get to see our
many conservation efforts first hand. Many of our guests do local
volunteer work at clinics and schools.
GARDENS – ORGANIC FOOD – RECYCLING-CHEMICALS
- If you have gardens, please describe any organic or chemical
farming practices.
We have an extensive garden for both flowers and food. We have
a large composting area and of course the wastes from the composting
toilets are used for flowering plants not food plants. We have
also made a large pond that we keep clean and flowing for natural
water storage.
- Do you have a purchasing policy - local/organic/good practice/fair
trade or any other? YES
If yes, please describe or attach?
We try and my management is instructed to always buy local where
possible. Honduras is a third world country and buying local
is not always possible but we at least try.
- Please describe any composting or recycling programmes, and
how, if possible, guests/visitors are encouraged to participate.
All of our soft drinks are purchased in returnable bottles.
We try to encourage the use of our large water containers rather
than plastic bottles. We have had college courses offered at
MCL, last year Colorado College did a course. While here the
students did a reef clean up, a conservation school trip, and
volunteered at local projects.
CHEMICALS AND CLEANING PRODUCTS
- Approximately, what percentage of cleaning products used are
chemical, and what percentage bio degradable; please describe
We try to use only bio degradable products. 90% success at this
time. We buy only laundry detergents containing no phosphates.
We are appalled to see that the vast majority of the locals use
local products (cheap !) that are in bar form and are full of
phosphates. They claim that they work better and are cheaper….of
course they are…so we forbid their use at MCL, and we
buy the soaps and detergents for use by our employees at MCL
for their own needs.
WATER
- Please describe your water supply, and any water conservation
programmes, and how, if possible, guests/visitors are encouraged
to participate.
Our water is from an underground spring which reaches the surface
on our property , then is a flowing creek that is then held in
a pond then let go into the sea. Above the pond is a well where
the water is taken and pumped by solar power to two large cisterns
20,000 and 15000 gallons. The water is treated there with small
amounts of chlorine. The height of the cisterns provides the
pressure to the rooms.
- Please describe your water purification and waste water treatment
systems.
Water from the well is tested monthly and has always been way
above average and very safe for drinking. We have a chlorine
system just to be sure. Waste in the cabanas is covered by our
SunMar composting Toilets. The main lodge has a grey water and
a black water in ground septic tank. The restaurant and employee
dormitory each have a properly engineered septic bed.
FLORA AND FAUNA CONSERVATION / PRESERVATION
- Describe any flora or fauna conservation/projects you are involved
in and how you encourage your guests to participate?
We have one of the most beautiful gardens on Roatan with I believe
22 different species of Hibiscus alone. We grow a lot of our
own fruit and vegetables. Guests are encouraged to walk the grounds
and learn what all these plants are and their use. We do not
allow any hunting on the property, and we have an informal conch
preserve. They are not contained and are free to move ,
or even leave, but we actively protect them and try to educate
the locals about their threatened status. We also have placed “lobster
condos” near the mangroves to provide more shelter for
them.
OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS
- Please describe what you feel is your single most important
eco achievement? (200 words max).
Awareness. Before MCL our area of the Island was totally ignorant
of conservation, our many programs and charity to the locals
have put us in a position of trust allowing us to be the teachers.
With the help of our staff and local government there has been
great improvement in this area.We were instrumental in stopping
the illegal netting of fish in our end of the island.
MONITORING / FEEDBACK / TRAINING
- Please describe any staff and customer eco training/education
programmes
We are in the early stages of an eco education programs to local
public schools. We have two classes that we are teaching with
our guests encouraged to participate. “ Leroy the lobster” and “Shelly
the Conch” both courses describe the life cycle of these
animals and the necessity for conservation. Our assistant manager
will be doing even more in the future.
- Please describe any materials you have to educate your guests
(brochures, posters, pamphlets, etc.)?
We have an extensive library and have too many to name. Our
web site has much information on the local flora and fauna found
in our area.
- Please describe how you monitor, maintain, and/or minimise
your environmental impact?
We are involved in Fly Fishing and therefore are always in the
areas of most concern, so we see what is happening. The fishing
is all catch and release. Enforcing an area of total conservation
on our property 22 Acres allows us to protect Iguanas, Agouti,
and sea animals from being taken. By working with the local government
we hope to have a large area near the lodge declared a Marine
Park, which will ensure conservation in a much larger area.
- Do you get customer feedback? YES
If yes, please describe how you collect the feedback, and what
you do with it.
This is an area where we need to improve. Our Assistant Manager
is working at this time on a feed back report. At present we
report on our website the steps we are taking and the success
of our many programs.
LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY
- What percentage of your staff are local nationals? 81%
- Please describe what you do to minimise your negative impacts
on the local community, and any cultural awareness, community
activities or local sponsorships programmes, and any other ways
you try to ensure the local community benefit from your
business.
Our Lodge was built with the idea of helping the locals. We
are the largest employer in our area of the Island. We sponsor
two children in school and have had others at many times. We
have hired many of the people who have been affected by the conservation
measures. We supply water to our local community during times
of dry weather. We have been active in trying to gain awareness
of the history of the area.
- If you have a green / eco certification label, please give
details and explain:
- your reasons for joining the scheme
- The benefits you feel you receive
- Any other positive or negative points
If you do not have a green certification / label,
please explain
- Your reasons for NOT joining any schemes,
- Any benefits you feel you are missing,
- Anything else.
We feel that we are doing all we can at this time, Our
guests still must arrive by jet aircraft to Roatan. We do use
the fuel efficient , lesser polluting four stroke engines, only
40 hp., outboards on our fishing skiffs.
- Anything else you feel is relevant or important.
When operating a business in a developing country, one is hampered
by local politics, lack of enforcement of any conservation laws
that are in place, and reluctance of politicians and locals to
report violations and fine violators. Any fines assessed don’t
generally make it to the proper use. Currently we have an honest
and hardworking mayor and are making some progress at this time.
Please provide as much documentary evidence as possible.
Please provide 2 references, preferably one from the local or national
government tourist authority or a registered NGO (Non-profit
Non Governmental Organization) locally, and the other from your
certification scheme if you are in one.
