herbs. We keep ducks which provide eggs. Our gardeners recycle
everything that they have a use for.
- Do you have a purchasing policy - local/organic/good practice/fair
trade or any other? YES/ NO
If yes, please describe or attach?
We don’t have a written policy however we have always
purchased any products we can from the local people. We have
a shop which showcases some of the skilled craftspeoples work
and we do not take any percentage for advertising their wares.
All we do is put the guests in touch with the craftsperson required
and the rest is done between themselves.
- Please describe any composting or recycling programmes, and
how, if possible, guests/visitors are encouraged to participate.
We only have composting toilets you will not find a flusher
anyway at footsteps. We encourage our guests and visitors to
leave a deposit whenever they can.

chemical, and what percentage bio degradable; please describe
The only chemicals we use are used in our kitchen for health

programmes, and how, if possible, guests/visitors are encouraged

We have a greywater filtration system which means that after
the guest has washed in it it then goes to water the gardens.
We have tube wells which we then use solar pumps to fill the
tanks. There is one piece of hose which runs outside each hut
to heat water for showering and the hot water lasts approximately
five minutes which ensures guests do not waste precious water
supplies.

We have a greywater filtrations system and our pool is filtered
through reed beds and blackstone .

are encouraged to take the walk and learn about the local flora
and fauna. We continue to plant trees as an ongoing project.
OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS
- Please describe what you feel is your single most important
eco achievement? (200 words max).
The composting toilets are our pride and joy, we rave about
them constantly and are trying to encourage others to follow
our lead. All of the local villagers who work at the lodge see
the benefits of this and are trying to install them into their
own homes. We have already installed them in places locally and
further a field.
MONITORING / FEEDBACK / TRAINING
- Please describe any staff and customer eco training/education
programmes
All of our staff have been educated on the lodges processes
so that they can explain it to our guests. This is on going and
any new initiatives that we might undertake woulld include the
staff being fully trained. We offer tours of our facilities to
anyone showing an interest and we often have groups from places
such as Coventry University.
- Please describe any materials you have to educate your guests
(brochures, posters, pamphlets, etc.)?
We do not use any of the above because we are an eco lodge and
paper is precious.
- Please describe how you monitor, maintain, and/or minimise
your environmental impact?
We feel that our staff training on all of the eco issues that
we promote within the lodge enables us to really minimise any
affects we have on our environment. The staff ensure that all
our guests eco footprints are at an absolute minimum at our lodge
by advising them of the way we dispose of things and utilise
everything. We will continue our good practice and look for ways
in which we can improve.
- Do you get customer feedback? YES / NO
If yes, please describe how you collect the feedback, and what
you do with it.
We have a lot of feedback via our link with responsible travel
which guests can view and we also leave questionnaires in the
guests room to see where we can improve our service. We are pleased
to say that a good majority of our feedback is excellent as can
be seen on the comments page of responsible travel.
LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY
- What percentage of your staff are local nationals? 100%
- Please describe what you do to minimise your negative impacts
on the local community, and any cultural awareness, community
activities or local sponsorships programmes, and any other ways
you try to ensure the local community benefit from your
business.
We employ all of our staff from the local villages. We also
ensure that we promote local markets and crafts people to our
guests. Our company also gives 20% of our profit back to the
local community which unfortunately due to the massive fire last
year has been very little; however we hope that this will change
this year. We encourage our guests to visit the local community
and get involved with it. We also have guests sponsoring our
staffs childrens education.

may bring. We have never really looked into these types of schemes.
- Anything else you feel is relevant or important.
Please provide as much documentary evidence as possible.
Please provide 2 references, preferably one from the local or national
government tourist authority or a registered NGO (Non-profit
Non Governmental Organization) locally, and the other from your
